Working under the direction of the staff nurses, the Certified Nurse’s Aide (C.N.A.) provides personal care and assistance to tenants to assure their safety and comfort. The C.N.A. follows the nurses’ instructions to provide treatments and carry out procedures. The observe and report changes in the tenant’s physical, mental and social status to nurses in order to insure the well-being of the tenant.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

      • Communicates pertinent information regarding tenant care throughout the tour of duty and at change of shift to the responsible nurse

  • Tenant Care Process
    • Assessment – Makes appropriate decisions regarding notifying the nurse responsible for the tenant.
    • Planning – Plans organization of assignment in order to complete assignment in a timely fashion
  • Implementation
    • Executes procedures consistent with interdisciplinary care plan, Petersen Health Care Procedure Manuals and that are within the scope of the role of the C.N.A.
      • Carries out basic hygiene measures including but not limited to the following: grooming, shaving, applying make-up, oral hygiene/dental care, cuts/cleans nails, fingers and toes, foot care, skin care, bathing/showering and cleaning incontinent tenants.
      • Turns and positions tenants to prevent pressure areas
      • Assists with standing, lifting, transferring and ambulating tenants
      • Gives and removes bed pans, urinals and performs Foley care
      • Measures temperature, radial pulse, respiration and blood pressure
      • Distributes nourishments, feeds tenants and records % of dietary intake
      • Assists with admission, transfer and discharges of tenants 
      • Collects specimens – urine, feces and sputum
      • Measures and records fluid intake and output
      • Maintains appropriate supplies of gloves and other personal protective equipment
      • Assists in dressing, buttoning, typing and snaps
      • Assists in organizing tenants drawers, closets and rooms
      • Cleans tenants jewelry as needed or upon request
      • Verifies that all dentures, glasses and personal items are marked with proper tenant’s name
      • Cleans wheelchairs and Geri-chairs on a regular basis and as needed
      • Passes ice water and assists tenants with hydrations
      • Answers call lights
      • Assists the nurse or physician with minor treatments and procedures as assigned
      • Provides post-mortem care
    • Provides for the safety and security needs of the tenant by:
      • Making frequent checks on tenants and responding to the tenant’s call for assistance in a timely and appropriate manner
      • Giving appropriate explanations
      • Maintaining communication devices (nurse call light, TV and telephone and other such equipment)
    • Utilizes techniques of infection control such as:
      • Frequent hand washing
      • Standard precautions and disease specific precautionary techniques
    • Provides for the psychosocial needs of tenants
    • Listens to and hears tenant and family anxieties and relays this information to the nurse
  • Role Involvement
    • Performs responsibilities in a cooperative manner under the guidance and supervision of professional nursing personnel. Uses time constructively and organizes assignments for maximum productivity.
    • Maintains current knowledge in present Nursing Practice (in-servicing and continuing education) including the Mandatory Educational Activities as Fire Safety/Evacuation Procedures, Blood borne pathogens and proper body mechanics)
    • Demonstrates responsibility for own Standard of Practice
      • Reporting for work as scheduled and on time
      • Adhering to facility policy regarding absenteeism and sick time
      • Avoiding work-related injuries through the application or proper practice techniques
    • Assumes responsibility for personal appearance by adhering to the Petersen Health Care dress code

  • Be of legal working age
  • Be able to read and follow written directions
  • Be able to communicate with tenants and co-workers in English
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, tenants, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
  • Work overtime as necessary
  • General knowledge and understanding of state and federal regulations as they pertain to long term care
  • Completion of the Certified Nurse’s Aide course or be enrolled in a Competency Training Program leading to certification in less than 120 days from the date of employment
  • Must have the current federally required vaccines or proof of a valid exemption.
